He Will Not Be Mocked
Updated: Feb 6
God won't be mocked (Galatians 6:7). If you think of this like a literal mocking of God when a person sins, you might imagine someone thinking in a sarcastic or belittling tone, " blah, blah, blah. Don't do this, don't do that. I'm going to go ahead and do ______ anyway. It's really not that deep and I'm not hurting anyone. Who cares?" Though a person may not literally say this out loud or literally think this, I believe sometimes our heart posture is like this.
The thing is, you really can't get away with mocking The King. By mocking I mean doing whatever you want though you are aware of His decrees. He even says He wrote them on our hearts so we are without excuse (2nd Corinthians 3:1-6). There are consequences for the things we do in this current life whether they are immediate or impact us later. It is like we are mocking Him by thinking there aren't repercussions. Perhaps this post is more so directed towards non-believers, but we should still take note. Whether one recognizes God or not, He still has the power and authority to do something about offenses done against Him.
After suffering from sin, God can allow us to come to our senses and be free from the effects. We recognize that a consequence of our sin has been lifted so we are thankful and relieved! Then, temptation comes along again and at some point, you want to get to the place in your journey where you don't avoid sin only because of the negative consequences, but you also become genuinely interested in God's opinions about different things and want to respect Him by agreeing with Him and saying to yourself in your mind, "The King set forth a decree to not do that so I won't do it."
And yes, there are even consequences to obeying God. You know, not the same kind of consequences that come from disobedience, of course. Maybe boredom is a consequence. Or missing out on experiencing something you really want to be part of because other people do it and seem to be fine. But we want to get to a point where we really do like Him and respect Him.
