Don't follow your heart

Updated: Feb 1

Jeremiah 17:9-10. Contrary to what the world says in the wistful proclamations made in film and television whenever a central character is at the cross roads of an important decision that needs to be made, we as followers of Christ simply cannot rely on our own hearts as a means to determine what is right or wrong to do.

Ideally, we will go to the word to see what the One who makes the sun rise and set has to say about a particular issue.

Can you imagine if everyone actually followed their hearts? That means everyone would be doing whatever they felt was right. Not what what is actually right as defined by the word of God. It is safest if we allow God to define what is right and wrong...not us. We have seen all of the terrible things humans have done to each other over the ages as a result of following one's own heart because it is what they wanted to do. It was right to them.

The plentitude of transgressions enacted on others is seen as the "right" thing to do, but "wrong" to someone else. It was in Hitler's heart to exterminate millions of innocent people because he followed his heart. He followed his own will and emotions based on his own reasoning (Proverbs 14:12). If we define right and wrong by what Jesus says, then that is the only truly objective means we have to judge what to do and what not to do. As long as we continue to 'live our truth' and follow our own deceitful hearts, we should continue to expect problems.
